There is mounting evidence for the need for this type of service. The current volume of elective orthopaedic procedures annually is c.200,000. Some 20% of patients report as being unsatisfied with their ongoing results and although many patients actively seek more tailored recovery-care solutions, these are currently not readily accessible in the UK healthcare system. Recently updated NICE guidelines state that “the intensive rehabilitation of people following a hip replacement was clinically significant and improved either mobility, activity of daily living capability or psychological improvement”. It has also been noted by NICE that; ‘intensive rehabilitation would reduce primary care visits, outpatient visits, hospital admissions, A&E attendances'.
